What You’ll Need
If you want to make homemade oat milk, you”ll need:
- Oats (see my recommendations below)
- Cold, filtered water
- *Nut milk bag (or cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer)
- High-speed blender (I use a Vitamix)
*For best results, use a nut milk bag
Choosing the Right Oats for Oat Milk
You’ll want to use rolled or old fashioned oats when making oat milk. I like to use organic, sprouted, gluten-free, and glyphosate free oats whenever possible. My favorite brand is One Degree. Other notable brands include Bob’s Red Mill and Oatsome.

Optional Add-Ins
For more flavor or sweetness, try adding in some of these ingredients!
- 1–2 tablespoons pure maple syrup or raw honey
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- 2-3 tablespoons cocoa powder (for chocolate oat milk)
If using cocoa powder: Add it after straining the oat milk. Then blend again briefly to fully combine and create a smooth chocolate milk.
Flavor Variations
- Vanilla Sweet Cream – Add vanilla + maple syrup
- Chocolate Oat Milk – Add cocoa powder + sweetener
- Cinnamon Roll – Add cinnamon + a splash of vanilla
- Unsweetened & Neutral – Skip all add-ins

Tips for the Creamiest Oat Milk
- Always use cold water
- Don’t soak the oats beforehand
- Don’t over-blend
- Double strain the oat milk
- Don’t over-squeeze
How to Store It
Transfer to a sealed jar or container and store in the fridge!

Notes
- For best results, use a nut milk bag and double strain the mixture
- Don’t over squeeze the nut milk bag, as any sediment/pulp in the milk can make the oat milk slimy
- Add 1/4 tsp salt, 1 tsp vanilla extract, or 1-2 tbsp pure maple syrup for extra flavor or sweetness
